Welcome for FYS-STK3155/4155 and plans for the first week

First of all a warm welcome to you all.

Our first lecture is Monday August 17, 1015am-12pm. The lectures on Tuesdays are meant as active learning sessions with discussions of exercises, lecture material and projects. The first week we will however use the Tuesday as a regular lecture.

The lab sessions on Wednesdays last four hours for each group (two in total) and promote active learning and work on exercises and projects. The sessions are  Wednesdays 815am-12pm and 1215pm-4pm. Please sign up as soon as possible for one of the groups.  Please select the group which fits you best.

The first week we start with simple linear regression, a repetition of linear algebra and elements of statistics needed for the course.

Note that there is no mandatory presence. All lectures can be accessed either in person or live via zoom at https://uio.zoom.us/my/mortenhj

All lectures will be recorded and made available (after minor editing) after the lecture. The whiteboard/blackboard notes will be posted immediately after the lecture.

All course material is at https://github.com/EducationalMaterialUiO/MachineLearningUiO/tree/main

The same zoom link will also be used for some of the lectures/additional material discussed during the labs Wednesdays. This link will be used throughout the semester.

August 17 and 18: Presentation of the course, aims and content. Introduction to software and repetition of Python Programming, linear algebra and basic elements of statistics. Discussion of linear regression. Lecture notes at https://github.com/EducationalMaterialUiO/MachineLearningUiO/blob/main/doc/BookML/LecturesBook.pdf, see chapter 3 on linear regression.
