Weekly plans and update for week 42

Dear all, we hope you all are doing well. We have had an unfortunate outbreak of covid-19 due to a party at a nearby dorm. The consequences for us is that we have to run the Thursday and Friday  lab sessions as online labs only. Next week we will most likely return to the in-person lab modality.

We apologize for this situation, definitely beyond our control.

For the lab sessions we will use the zoom link

Note also that we shifted the deadline of project 3 from Oct 21 to Oct 26 (Monday). Hope this helps.

Last week we started discussing numerical integration of low-dimensional integrals (typically less than 6-8 dims). This will serve as a stepping stone towards the introduction of Monte Carlo (MC) methods. For the latter, we start with MC integration. MC methods will keep us busy the next 4-5 weeks. This is an exciting field!!

But tomorrow's topic is to discuss the best methods for low-dimensional integral, namely gaussian quadrature. These are covered by chapter 5 of the lecture notes and the slides at http://compphysics.github.io/ComputationalPhysics/doc/pub/integrate/html/integrate-reveal.html

On Friday we start with Monte Carlo methods and basic overview of central concepts before we start looking at MC integration.

These topics are discussed in chapter 11 of the lecture notes and the slides at http://compphysics.github.io/ComputationalPhysics/doc/pub/mcint/html/mcint-reveal.html

Best wishes and cya soon again,

Aksel, Anders, Kaspara, Maria, Morten, Rene' and Sebastian
