FYS-GEO4100 – Introductory project work in physics of geological processes

Course content

Tools and methods in scientific literary work, including use of LateX, Word and Endnote; literary search, including citation search, use of references to scientific work and use of library services; presentation technique.

Learning outcome

The course will give the students an introduction to basic methods in scientific literary work and presentation through a compulsory project work. The project work will be an introductory study to the master thesis. It will be adapted to each student and will include practical use of the methods which are taught. Through the project work the student has to study literature of relevance, carry out a small scientific project, and report from the project in written an oral form.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Recommended previous knowledge

Bachelor degree in physics, geo-sciences or applied mathematics.

Teaching

The course extends over one full semester with 30 hours of lectures. In addition the course includes compulsory student presentations.

Examination

Compulsory presentation and compulsory project work. Passed/not passed.
