FYS-GEO4110 – Scientific Communication and Research Ethics

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

Tools and methods in scientific research and communication, covering scientific research ethics,
literature and citation search, types of scientific documents, writing techniques and presentation
techniques. Specific computer-based word-processing, typesetting, presentation, and bibliographic tools
will be demonstrated and taught.

Learning outcome

The course will give the student an introduction to scientific ethics and communication through the
completion of a project, preparatory to the student’s masters thesis. The student will be expected to take
concurrent courses in techniques of scientific experimentation, observation, analysis, or computation
which will provide the raw material for reports and presentations. Students will be required to make
presentations (oral and poster) and write reports based on work they do in other courses or independent
research. They will also be required to attend talks and poster sessions, interact with the speakers, and
report to the class on lessons learned.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

Bachelor degree in physics, geo-sciences or applied mathematics.

Teaching

The course extends over one full semester with 30 hours of lectures. The course includes compulsory
student presentations.

Examination

Compulsory presentation, counting 50 % of the grade, and compulsory project work, counting 50 % of the grade. Passed/not passed.

This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who
withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information about
