Autumn 2020 the exams of most courses at the MN Faculty will be conducted as digital home exams or oral exams, using the normal grading scale. The semester page for your course will be updated with any changes in the form of examination.
This course provides an introduction to the essentials of how to develop attractive technology and high-growth ventures. The perspective taken is that of a hands-on entrepreneur! You will learn techniques to creatively generate business ideas, shape and develop those ideas into viable commercial opportunities, and finally communicate the potential of the opportunity through a business plan and pitch.
You will work on prepared business ideas provided by the faculty. Relevant topics will include how to write a business plan, how to build competitive advantage and pitching an idea to customers and stakeholders.
After taking this course, you will:
Have a solid understanding about the process of creating a new venture
Have a solid understanding about different approaches to create business ideas and shape and develop those ideas into viablean business propositionsopportunity such as effectuation, Business Model Canvas, Lean Startup and Design Thinking
- Have a solid understanding on the different sources of competitive advantage, including intellectual property rights, proprietary technology, partnerships tailored business model and go-to-market strategy, and is able to utilize these sources to build competitive advantage.
Be able to translate real life challenges into attractive busi-ness propositions by applying approaches such as Effectu-ation, Business Model Canvas, Lean Startup and Design Thinking.
- Be able to write a business plan and other written documentation to effectively communicate an attractive entrepreneurial opportunity.
- Be able to pitch your business opportunity in a convincing way to persuade a panel of stakeholders.
Admission to the course
The course is available only for students admitted to the study programme Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (master's two years).
- 5 credits overlap with ENT4500 – Social Entrepreneurship (discontinued).
- 3 credits overlap with ENT4000I – From idea to business - Intensive.
Weekly classes throughout the semester that include lectures, group exercises, and in-class activities. In addition, readings and group/individual assignments between classes.
Due to the significant amount of group work and in-class activities in this course, 80% attendance of the lectures is mandatory. Completion of mandatory attendance is required in order to pass the course.
The course grade is based on the following assessments:
- A final group assignment including an oral group presentation accounting for in total 50% of the overall score. Students in each group are given the same score. Group members who do not fulfill their obligations can be scored individually from the group.
- Individual assignments/quizzes given during the semester accounting for in total 50% of the overall score.
Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams. All exams and assignments must be taken during the same semester.
Completion of mandatory attendance is required in order to pass the course.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
