Course content

This is a fundamental course in flow cytometry for users who want to better understand this technology. Principles and applications will be taught.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course, the students should understand how a flow cytometer works, and which parameters are important to consider to obtain optimal results. They will also obtain insight into some important applications and staining procedures, and learn how to set up experiments on their own.

Admission

The course is restricted to students at the Medical Student Research Programme at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry, UiO.

The courses MEDFL5170 and MF9170 have common admission.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Basic knowledge of cell biology is required.

Teaching

The course is organized as full day teaching over 3 days and includes lectures and group exercises.

You have to participate in at least 80 % of the teaching to be allowed to take the exam. Attendance will be registered.

Examination

There will be a 90 minutes course exam at the end of the course. The exam will not be a multiple choice test.

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
