KJM3420 – Analytical chemistry. Separation methods I

Course content

Chromatographic Theory, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Column Chromatography, Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) and Electrophoresis. The basis for the different separation principles and techniques will be addressed. In the laboratory samples will be analyzed by the student.

Learning outcome

The student is expected to become familiar with the most important separation methods, their basis and potential use. The student is expected to gain independent laboratory skills in the experimental techniques, and knowledge of the principles behind and the construction of the instrumentation that is used.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

KJM2400 – Analytical Chemistry I or similar course.

Recommended previous knowledge

KJM1100 – General chemistry (continued), KJM1110 – Organic chemistry I (continued), KJM1120 – Inorganic Chemistry (continued) and KJM1130 – Physical Chemistry I - Thermodynamics and Kinetics, or similar courses.

Teaching

The course includes 20 hours of lectures, 8 hours of exercises and a mandatory laboratory course which consists of 6 exercises (70 laboratory hours). Approved laboratory course is a prerequisite for taking the exam.

The first lecture and the laboratory lessons are mandatory. You therefore have to be registered at the first lecture and at the first laboratory lesson. If you are unable to join the mandatory lessons, you have to inform the Expedition Office in advance (phone 22 85 54 46, e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no). If you fail to register in either of these ways, you will lose your access to the group lectures and to the examinations for the semester.

Examination

Written (4 hours) or oral examination. Letter grades (A-F).

This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent semester for candidates who fail or withdraw during an ordinary examination.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Other

The teaching will be cancelled if less than 3 students have registered for the course by the closing date for course registration in January.

The laboratory course is valid in 4 semesters after it was taken. After that time, a new laboratory course is required.
