Course content
The course is dealing with aspects of selected areas in pharmacology and pharmacodynamics. This includes in depth basal pharmacology, updated knowledge on selected drug groups and areas where new knowledge is accumulated and with ongoing drug developments.
Learning outcome
The course will lead to detailed knowledge in central selected pharmacological areas, concerning actual therapy, science and drug development. These areas are (2010): Drug-receptor interactions, anticancer therapy, drugs in neurogenerative diseases, drugs in asthma and KOLS, antiobesity and type 2 diabetes treatment, and drugs used against depression and anxiety.
The students will achieve knowledge in present therapy and new targets for drug action, including knowledge of developing processes for drug development. The students should be able to evaluate if a drug target has a future potential in therapy.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
A 5-year master degree in relevant topic.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with FRM5710 – Pharmacology, graduate level (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with FARM5170 – Drugs for treatment of degenerative and life style diseases.
Teaching
All lectures during the spring semester are in common with the corresponding masterdegree-subject (FRM5710 – Pharmacology, graduate level (discontinued)). It is manditory for each Ph.D.-student to actively take part in the tuition of the masterstudents and to make several oral presentations from the curriculum and to lead the discussions with the masterstudents. A minor part of the curriculum is self-study.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
The course can be canceled if the number of students enrolled is low.
Examination
A four hour written exam/oral exam after the number of students.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt. It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
