Hi all,

I'm unfortunately away on Thursday (Nov 5) and Friday (Nov 6), so we will not have in-person lectures these days. As replacement I have pre-recorded two video lectures for you to watch. These recorded lectures are already available in Canvas.

The group sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will run as normal.

Have a nice week!
Anders

Hi all,

As indicated on the course schedule, our lecture tomorrow (Thursday) will be in Lille Fysiske Auditorium, on the second floor, since our usual auditorium is booked for an event.

See you tomorrow,
Anders

Hi all,

As mentioned in the lectures, for the midterm course evaluation we have prepared a quick and anonymous questionnaire for you to fill in:

https://nettskjema.no/a/659107

It should only take you 3-4 minutes to complete the questionnaire, and it is very useful for us in the teaching team. Please complete the questionnaire this sometime this week.

Thanks!
Anders

Hi all,

Our good ol' technical recording issue reappeared briefly today, so there are about 15 minutes missing from today's lecture recording. But to those who were not present, you can fill in the blanks by simply reading the relevant part of the lecture notes, as I was following those notes quite closely.

Have a nice weekend,
Anders

Hi all,

A while back I promised you an example README file. It was delayed a bit due to other urgent things, but now we have added a page discussing what a README should include and a link to one example.

Note that we're not overly picky about the look and structure of the README files on Projects 1 and 2 – though we of course expect there to be a README file with the basic information as specified in the project descriptions. From Project 3 onwards we will be a bit more picky.

PS: Due to a Canvas issue the Project 2 groups were not available earlier. Apologies for this, we have fixed it now.

Good luck wrapping up Project 2!
Anders

Hi all,

Looks like I forgot to hit the publish button when I prepared Project 2 on Canvas last week. Should be fixed now. Good luck with finishing the work!

Best,
Anders

Hi all,

Despite several attempts at figuring out what the issue is, today's recording also failed halfway through the lecture and was lost. Very frustrating! (Especially as the exact same recording setup worked without issue last year.) I'm doing what I can to sort this out, but until I do I will just keep sharing the corresponding lecture videos from last year.

Best,
Anders

Hi all,

This message is only for WSL users.

We recently learned that when working with WSL, file reading/writing can be a lot(!) slower if you keep your project files on the Windows part of your file system, while working on them from the WSL file system (e.g. by running g++ commands or git commands or similar). So the recommendation is simply to keep your projects stored and run entirely within the WSL file system.

Best,
Anders

Dear all,

Unfortunately the issue with the lecture recording system appeared again today, so today's lecture is not available. I will contact IT to see what we can do to improve this going forwards. But as always, the most failsafe strategy is to attend the lectures in person, if you can. :)

On Canvas I have shared a recording from last year, which should be ~75% similar to today's lecture. Look for the video titled "From 2025: Fri Sep 05 2025 (copy)".

Best,
Anders

Hi all,

Since the King's funeral is scheduled for September 9, we will postpone the Project 1 deadline by one day, to Thursday September 10.

(Of course, I would recommend you aim to hand in Project 1 before then, so that you can instead use the group sessions on September 10 to focus on Project 2.)

Best,
Anders

Dear all,

Due to some technical problem on the server side of the recording system, the video recording from today's lecture failed. (These things inevitably happen from time to time.)

As always, you can check the lecture notes page https://github.com/anderkve/FYS3150/blob/master/lecture_notes/2026/README.md for an overview of what I discussed in the lecture and then read the relevant parts of the lecture notes and our course web page.

But for those who really want to see a lecture recording, I have found the recording for the corresponding lecture last year and shared that on Canvas. Look for the video titled "From 2025: Fri Aug 29 2025 (copy)". That lecture was ~80% similar to today's lecture.

Best,
Anders

Dear all,

Welcome to this course on computational physics. We look forward to meeting you all!

Here's some practical info, in preparation for the start of teaching in week 34:

Our first lecture will be on Thursday 20 August, at 10:15 in Store fysiske auditorium.

We have a dedicated course web page for all the fun, technical stuff in the course. This is were you will find things like tutorials, code snippets, project descriptions, etc. (Note that these pages are in active development.)

Important note for Windows users: This course is based on everyone having access to a Unix terminal, i.e. the basic command-line system used on Linux and Mac. For Windows users this means that you must install Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). For instructions, go to the ...
