Today from 14:15 to 15:30 there will be a session of questions and answers, as well as feedback on assignment 2. I remind you that you need the Particle physics booklet from the Particle Data Group at the exam. Don't forget it. I still have a few copies in case.

The schedule of the remaining lecture has been updated. Read the content.

The document fys350-16-pensum contains further information about the "exam pensum". This will be updated during the next days.

All delivered assignments II are approved. Good luck with the exam! For the moment, a calculator and the small Particle physics booklet of Particle Data Group are allowed.

Some people asked about the 2014 Exam questions (ORAL) posted on the web.

IMPORTANT: these are examples of sets of ORAL exams from 2014. The WRITTEN exam in 2016 will be of different form with more calculations and detailed questions, in the line of the first 2 assignments!

Due to some people traveling the masterclass data session will take place on Tuesday May 3 instead of May 2 as previously announced.

Publisert 21. apr. 2016 11:28

Check the schedule, in particular pay attention to May 2 and 3. Presence is required (currently May 2) to work on ATLAS Masterclass data. Also bring your laptop. The session can be moved to May 3 if really necessary.

We will go through the questions in one of the coming sessions. Copies are available during the lectures and on-demand.

Please, ignore the last page (6) of the assignment. The questions are mostly a repetition of the previous page and the last problem was already treated in the exercise session.

Preferred delivery: hand it to me (at the beginning of the lecture) or at the reception.

As stated in the FYS3510 web site, and given that there are 25 students taking part in the CERN visit and 26 expected to take the exam, the FYS3510 final exam is confirmed on June 6th and will be WRITTEN.

Details will follow.

Assignment 1 is to be delivered by 14.3 @ 14.14 just before teaching starts.  Questions related to the exercises will be addressed during the lectures on March 7th and 8th.

At the beginning of the March 14 session, there will be the opportunity to discuss and interpret the feedback to the mid-term evaluation, as well as details related to the CERN visit. The higher the attendance, the better.

The future plan will soon be updated. We have so far collected enough background material (equations of motion, transition probabilities, perturbation theory, relativistic kinematics, ... ). I encourage you to follow the Exercise session related to Appendices 2 and 3 and chapters 3, 4, 5 next week (22.2 and 23.2). We've started looking at particle physics processes (scattering, annihilation, decay) to determine cross sections and lifetimes. We now compare electromagnetism to other interactions (chapter 5 to be finished today 16.2). We have introduced some conservation laws and more will be introduced in chapter 6 (starting today). Conservation laws, closely related to symmetries, are important to classify particles, state which processes are allowed or not and are at the heart of force generation.

At the end of today's session (16.2) I will possibly run a short discussion. So all are welcome to attend.

The webcast of simultaneous press conferences of the LIGO and VIRGO Collaborations from Washington and Cascina on the search for gravitational waves will be transmitted TODAY on Thursday 11 February 2016 at 16:30 in the Main Auditorium (500/1-001): https://www.youtube.com/user/VideosatNSF/live

It will be followed by a seminar on

"New results on the Search for Gravitational Waves“ by Barry Barish (Caltech/LIGO)

Representatives of the LIGO, VIRGO and GEO experiments will be available for questions after the seminar.
