GEO4720 – General micropaleontology

Course content
A presentation of the various microfossil groups of botanical and zoological origin by discussing their morphology, taxonomy, mode of life, environments and stratigraphic distribution. Emphasis is laid on groups of geological importance by elucidating their application for dating, correlation and facies interpretation of sedimentary successions.
Learning outcome
To give the students basic knowledge of microfossils and their geological applications. It will provide an extended basis for more advanced studies in paleontology and stratigraphy of basin developments.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
The following courses must be taken before the first lecture in GEO4720:
- HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety OR MNHMS0010LS – Innføring i laboratoriesikkerhet (discontinued) OR MNHMS0020LS – In-depth Laboratory Safety (discontinued)
- HMS0505 – Electricity Safety eller MNHMS0015ES – Introduction to Electricity Safety (discontinued)

Teaching
Lectures, colloquia and working groups - totally 6 hours per week. This may be changed according to the number of students who gets admitted.
We reserve the right to cancel teaching in this course in semesters when less than 3 students are admitted.
Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no
To attend the lectures it is required that the following courses must be taken before the first lecture:
- HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety OR MNHMS0010LS – Innføring i laboratoriesikkerhet (discontinued) OR MNHMS0020LS – In-depth Laboratory Safety (discontinued)
- HMS0505 – Electricity Safety eller MNHMS0015ES – Introduction to Electricity Safety (discontinued)
You will need to provide documentation that you have passed the above mentioned HSE courses when you attend the lectures.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
This course has 3 exam parts which each count 1/3 and must be passed:
- Report and lecture
- Multiple choice exam
- Final written examination
Language of examination
In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
We reserve the right to change the form of teaching and exams according to the number of students. This will be decided between the teacher and students at the beginning of the semester.
