BIO4250 – Evolution and systematics of organismal groups: The Plant Kingdom

Course content

This course covers evolution and mechanisms of evolution in plants, systematics and classification of selected groups of plants. Special emphasis is put on examples from current research at UiO and the methods used. Teaching on genetic and morphological diversity within systematic or ecological important groups is partly given in the field through a fieldcourse.

To get insight in evolution and classification of plants as well as modern research methods and important fields for research.

Lectures, seminar, laboratorywork and a fieldcourse. Selected scientific papers will be discussed in a seminar where active participation is expected. In addition there will be a small project with an essay. Compulsory attendance at seminars, laboratorywork and field course. The course will take place at Lids hus, Natural History Museum, Tøyen.

The field course in spring 2018 will be given in Kenya or Ethiopia. The students must cover expenses for food and transport to and from the airport. The flight ticket and hotel is covered by the department. There will be an alternative arrangement for student who cannot travel for medical reasons.

First lecture is mandatory.  If you can not attend the first lecture, please send a note to, before the first lecture.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.


The essay must be approved before you can be accepted to take the final exam. A floristic exam will be arranged during the field course, weighted 25%. A final written exam (3 h), based on the text book and lab course, weighted 75%.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: BIOS4216 – Evolution and Systematics of Organismal Groups: The Plant Kingdom

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.


The course is only given if three or more students meet on the first lecture.
