IN4180 – Cyber Operations

Course content

Cyber crime, cyber espionage, and other networking attacks pose an increasing threat to small and large organizations, industrial infrastructures and even nation states. Through this course you'll learn the skills necessary to defend networks against cyber attacks and to operate a security operation center. Defending a network is also called a "blue-team" approach. In the corresponding "red-team" course IN5290 - Ethical hacking you can learn how to test the security of networks.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will:

  • have understanding of cybersecurity concepts,
  • have knowledge about security monitoring,
  • have knowledge about host-based analysis,
  • have knowledge about network intrusion detection and analysis
  • have knowledge about CTI (Cyber Threat Intelligence)
  • have critical-thinking and problem-solving skills for cyber operations
  • be able to detect, triage and respond to security incidents
  • be able to perform tasks as part of cybersecurity operations
  • be able to use practical cyberops tools
  • be able to use tools for CTI (Cyber Threat Intelligence)

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme..

Priority is given to students belonging to the Master Programme Informatics: Information Security.

General knowledge about computer security, e.g. IN2120 – Information Security.


4 hours of lectures and practice per week.


The course grade is based on the following assessment items:

  • Home exam: 40% of the final grade
  • Written digital exam: 60% of the final grade

Both exams must have a passing grade and both must be passed the same semester.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.
