IN5240 – Design of CMOS RF-Integrated Circuits

The course covers design aspects of RF IC circuits and systems. Fundamental RF circuit theory (matching, noise and distortion) and design and analysis of CMOS RF circuits like filters (passive), amplifiers (LNA, PA), mixers, voltage and injection locked oscillators (VCOs and ILOs) as well as phase-locked loops (PLLs) will be covered in depth.
After completing this course, you will:
- understand fundamental RF circuit theory and design
- be able to design and analyze selected CMOS RF ICs
- be able to simulate and model RF circuits using advanced tools as Cadence and ADS
- comprehend matching, noise and distortion in RF IC design
- be able to test and characterize RF circuits in the lab
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Recommended previous knowledge
- 10 credits overlap with IN9240 – Design of CMOS RF-Integrated Circuits.
- 3 credits overlap with INF5481 – RF-kretser, teori og design (continued).
- 3 credits overlap with INF9481 – RF-kretser, teori og design (continued).
The course lasts one semester and has 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of exercises per week. Furthermore, a project assignment with up to 3 submissions must be completed. The project is conducted in groups of a maximum of 2 students. The project must be submitted to the specified deadlines and the first two submissions are assessed with pass/fail. Exercises from previous courses are not approved.
The last project submission must be delivered within the deadline. Project report is graded and counts 40% of final grade. The final exam counts 60% and is held orally or as a written exam (4 hours) dependent on the number of students.

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
