IN5650 – AI Software Engineering

Course content

This course will help students understanding and manage the challenges related to assessing, monitoring and deploying AI-powered modules in complex systems, as well as for creating an agentic framework to create robust code and various other artifacts such as documentation etc.

Learning outcome

Through this course you will:

  • Learn how to customize, test and deploy a production-quality AI-powered module to be integrated into a complex software system
  • Learn how to build, evaluate, and deploy AI agents using modern frameworks
  • Learn how to apply MLOps practices to experiment tracking, CI/CD for ML, model monitoring, drift detection and assure the trustworthiness of the AI system
  • Learn the key principles to develop and deploy complex systems in a hybrid team of developers and AI agents

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

Master students belonging to Informatics: programming and systems architecture are prioritized.

It is recommended to have at least one course in (Python) programming (such as from IN1000/IN1010) and a course in ML (such as IN2160/IN3050). It would also be advantageous to have take some software engineering course (for ex. IN2000).

Teaching

2 hours of lectures and 2 hours group sessions per week.

Completion of mandatory assignments is required. Read more about requirements for submission of assignments, group work and legal cooperation under guidelines for mandatory assignments.

Examination

The exam consists of the following parts:

  • A project done in teams of 2-4 students where they will design and build a production-grade AI application. This project will account for 50% of the grade.
  • Individual, oral exam, which will include open discussion on their project and questions for students. The oral exam will account for 50% of the grade.

Both the project and the oral exam must to be passed to pass the course, and they must be passed the same semester.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed during the oral exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
