TEK2900 – Systems Thinking in Motion: From Concept to Implementation I

Course content

This course introduces you to systems thinking through an enquiry-based and project-based learning approach designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice. As the first part of a two-course sequence (connected to TEK2910 – Systems Thinking in Motion: From Concept to Implementation II), TEK2900 focuses on developing the plans, methods, and research questions necessary to carry out complex projects in the following semester.

You will first select a project within one of the following themes: Space Systems, Renewables Energy Systems, Robotics & Autonomous Systems, Security of Cyber-Physical Systems. Then, by utilizing Systems Engineering practices, you will determine system needs, requirements, and verification methods, culminating in the creation of a System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) to govern the project's execution.

Through this curriculum you will

  • practice becoming a problem solver, who can independently determine how to apply new theory to practical challenges
  • learn how to identify knowledge gaps, including new fields and unknown, and perform literature studies to address them
  • get to know how to design research questions (RQs), evaluations, and tests to bridge the knowledge gaps
  • learn how to connect the dots between existing academic knowledge and the specific enhancements required for the project implementation

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will

  • be able to use Systems Engineering practices to determine system needs, requirements, and verification methods
  • be capable of developing a System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) to govern a project
  • have the skills to drive research through inquiry-based learning, identifying how to apply new theories to practical challenges
  • be able to identify knowledge gaps and design research questions, evaluations, and tests to bridge them
  • have experience in work-integrated learning, including teamwork, communication, and project management skills
  • be prepared to develop and plan a technology systems concept from initial enquiry to a ready-to-implement design

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

This course is open for admission to students on the bachelor's programme Technology Systems: Science and Engineering. Please refer to the programme description for admission requirements.

Teaching

The course utilizes a blend of lectures, project-based learning, and hands-on training.

A core component is an Innovation Bootcamp, held at the beginning of the course. This 1-week intensive session focuses on

  • rapid prototyping: utilizing makerspaces with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines to turn complex challenges into human-centered solutions
  • drones & autonomous vehicles: prototype design and control for mobile robotics, utilizing motion tracking and specialized hardware
  • microgrids: technical performance and control optimization of components like PVs, batteries, and wind turbines

The entrepreneurial portion of the curriculum is delivered by the UiO Growth House, which helps students mature early-stage ideas.

Full attendance during the intensive bootcamp and course days is compulsory.

Examination

Students must complete tasks including individual written assignments and group presentations, which must be approved to qualify for the examination.

The course concludes with an assessment evaluating the developed technology systems concept and research plan for the implementation in the next semester (TEK2910).

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best and F is a fail.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
