TEK3910 – Introduction to Energy Systems
Course content
How do renewable energy technologies work together in a real energy system, and why do some solutions succeed while others fail? This course introduces you to the concept of energy systems through the lens of systems thinking. You will explore how various energy technologies, power grid and digital tools interact in real-life applications.
This course will also take a practical and interdisciplinary approach, helping you understand not only how technologies function but how they must be integrated, scaled, and adapted for societal and environmental needs.
This course opens multiple pathways into future master’s degree studies in Renewable Energy Systems without repeating the depth of specialized master-level courses.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
After completing this course, you will be able to
- explain the basic working principles of major renewable technologies (solar photovoltaic panel, wind turbines, hydropower, batteries, hydrogen-based solutions, etc.)
- describe how energy systems operate across energy generation, storage, and distribution
- recognize key system-level challenges such as variability, balancing, and integration
Skills:
After completing this course, you will be able to
- analyse simple renewable hybrid system configurations (e.g., solar PVs/wind turbines-batteries/hydrogen) using introductory tools
- interpret real datasets (weather, energy demand, energy production profiles) and identify system constraints
- communicate technological options with awareness of climate, environmental, social, and economic implications
General competence:
- work in interdisciplinary groups to solve system-design problems
- reflect on how renewable technologies influence society and climate governance
- understand how technical and non-technical factors influence energy system decisions
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
This course is open for admission to students on the bachelor's programme Technology Systems: Science and Engineering. Please refer to the programme description for admission requirements.
Teaching
The course utilizes a blended approach that combines individual theoretical study with collaborative practical application to develop work-integrated learning skills. The teaching format includes
- case-based learning, where you analyze real-world cases and propose technical solutions.
- simulations through using simplified tools such as Python, MATLAB, or beginner-friendly web tools for basic modeling
- hands-on exercises, where you collaborate on renewable energy scenarios to strengthen teamwork, structured communication, and basic project management
- interactive sessions with group discussions, system-mapping workshops, and guest lectures from industry professionals
Through planned activities you will strengthen your abilities in teamwork, structured communication, critical thinking, and basic project management. These are transferable skills to both technical and interdisciplinary work environments, and highly relevant for careers in the energy and technology sectors.
Examination
You will be required to design a simple renewable energy system (e.g., a hybrid microgrid) and present the results or submit a short analytical report. This will count 100% towards your final grade.
The course has mandatory assignments that must be delivered and passed in order to sit the exam.
