ECON9165 – Advanced Mathematics

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

This course provides a rigorous introduction to the mathematical tools and concepts that underpin modern economic theory and econometrics.

The course emphasises both conceptual understanding and the ability to work with formal mathematical arguments. Students will engage with proofs, theoretical examples, and applications drawn from economic theory and econometrics. The aim is to equip students with the mathematical foundations required to read and produce research in theoretical and applied economics.

Learning outcome

Knowledge outcomes

The course develops knowledge of the mathematical foundations commonly used in economic analysis. Successful students will understand the key concepts, theorems, and techniques that support modern economic modelling, and how these tools are used to analyse economic models and build econometrics methods.

Mastering the course’s content will enable students to follow the mathematical arguments used in advanced economic theory and econometrics papers.

Skills

Students will develop skills in formal mathematical reasoning, including constructing and understanding proofs and formal results. Through problem sets, students will gain experience applying mathematical techniques to problems that arise in economic research.

Competence

You should be able to read and understand theoretical economics papers that rely on mathematical arguments and to follow the formal structure of proofs and modelling frameworks. You should also be able to use these mathematical tools in your own academic work, for example when developing theoretical models.

Admission to the course

PhD candidates who have been admitted to the programme at the Department of Economics. Other candidates admitted to a PhD program may apply to take the course.

Teaching

The course takes place during two weeks.

Credit for the course requires both active participation in class and a take home exam/essay.

Examination

A 5 hour take-home exam.

Examination support material

All support material is allowed. When using AI, you must explain and be transparent about its use: read more about the guidelines for AI and exams at How to use AI as a student - University of Oslo

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
