Course content
The course gives you insight into what basic skills means in relation to the teaching and learning of English as a school subject. Based on educational policy documents and relevant theory, we discuss how to teach basic skills in the English classroom.
You will specialise in one of the basic skills according to your interests: oral skills in English (speaking and/or listening); written skills in English (reading and/or writing); or digital skills in English. Your chosen specialization can then be linked to an aspect relevant for the teaching of English is Norwegian schools, e.g. culture, society, literature, or language learning.

- relevant educational policy documents and central topics for basic skills in English as a school subject in Norway
- research on the learning and teaching of basic skills in English
- the teaching and learning of basic skills in the English classroom
Skills to
- analyse and discuss policy documents, empirical research, and relevant theory related to basic skills in English, and connect these to each other
- apply theoretical concepts related to basic skills in English to classroom practice, and apply international research to the Norwegian context
- specialise in a specific area of English
- present knowledge from individual study
Competence to
- continuously develop your teacher professionalism in English as a school subject
- apply research-based knowledge in the development of your English teaching practices
Admission

5 credits overlap with EDID4002 – Basic Skills in English (discontinued)
* The course EDID4002 does not include practice and can therefore not be applied to the programme specialisation in English in the Teacher Education Programme without students completing 15 days practice according to the practice plan.
Teaching
The course offers 28 hours of teaching during the semester. Student activities include academic discussions, individual in-depth study and oral presentations. Course reading is set to approximately 650 pages.
The course includes 15 days of practice. Further instructions and information about practice is published on the semester page.
Students are expected to meet prepared for teaching activities, and take responsibility for individual study of course reading. Participation in group discussions is a condition for developing a shared understanding of theory and research and acquiring the relevant competence to complete the course.
Teaching takes place at UiO and in practice schools in Oslo and Akershus. Please be aware that you might need to travel 1 hour to and from the practice school. Travel expenses related to teaching practice must be expected and will not be refunded.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Students have to be enrolled for the course to attend classes.
Examination
The exam is a term paper (1400–1800 words) on the student’s chosen basic skill(s) for specialisation.
15 days with practice needs to be passed to be able to submit the term paper for the exam.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Examination support material
All sources of aid are permitted.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
