Course content

The course introduces perspectives in different research traditions on learning and creative processes in individuals, groups, schools, organizations and cultures. Mastering concepts of creativity, learning and innovation – and how these are related – is the main aim of the course. The course also covers design-based research methods used in studies of creativity, learning and innovation in education, culture and business sectors. There is a focus on practical group activities, for example, planning, leading and evaluating creative processes.

Learning outcome

  • skills in fostering creativity in different disciplines through the pedagogical design of activities and environments
  • skills in design-based research methods and their use in planning studies of learning and creativity 
  • competence in accounting for different perspectives and methods to foster, study and evaluate innovation
  • competence in evaluating and understanding the conditions for facilitating learning,creativity and innovation in different practices

The course is a compulsory part of the “Communication, Design and Learning” master program. 

Qualified exchange students may be admitted if there is capacity. 

Ranking applicants for admission

Admission for qualified external applicants will be prioritized according to the date of application.

Course capacity

All students registered in the “Communication, Design and Learning” master program will be admitted to the course. Capacity is a minimum of 5 students and a maximum of 30 students. 


Formal prerequisite knowledge

There are no requirements beyond formal admission qualifications to the Master in Education, Communication, Design and Learning.


The course will be taught using varied approaches. Three types of activities are central:  

  • Lectures (in class and pre-recorded)
  • Individual student presentations and class discussions of texts from the reading list
  • Group activities involving practical assignments.

Compulsory Components 

There are 3 compulsory assignments in the course. The activities require your participation in class. Each assignment forms the basis for a reflection paper (max. 3 pages) that is part of the exam. See details under Exam.

  1. Individual assignment: Selecting and presenting a text from the reading list. 
  2. Group assignment: Planning, leading and evaluating a creative process. 
  3. Group assignment: Planning, leading and evaluating a study using design-based research methods. 

Guidelines and deadlines for the compulsory components will be provided at semester start.  

If you fail a compulsory assignment, an alternative assignment may be arranged at the discretion of the teacher.

The reading list is approx. 1,500 pp.

Access to teaching

Program students and external students who have been admitted after applying as stated above.


The exam has four components. 

  1. Individual reflection paper based on compulsory assignment 1. max. 3 pages
  2. Group reflection paper based on compulsory assignment 2. max. 3 pages
  3. Group reflection paper based on compulsory assignment 3. max. 3 pages

Each assignment will count for 10% of final grade. The 3 assignments together comprise 30% of the final grade.

4. Home Exam, 12-15 pages, 14 days. The subject of the exam will be announced at the start of the exam period. The Home Exam will count for 70% of final grade.

All compulsory components, including exam components 1-3, must be completed with a passing grade before you may take the Home Exam. All exam parts (1-4) must be passed in order for you to pass the exam.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

If you have passed the 3 compulsory components, you do not have to retake them to retake the Home Exam. 

If you have failed any of the exam components 1-3, you may apply to retake within the same semester.

If you fail the Home Exam, normal rules for retake apply. 

There are two options to choose between if you wish to retake the exam to improve your results:

  1. You can retake all 4 exam parts, which requires that you retake the whole course. 
  2. You can retake the Home Exam only (70% of final grade). The passing grades for exam components 1-3 will stand, comprising 30% of your grade.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
