MBV-INF4410 – Bioinformatics for Molecular Biology

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

This course will introduce students to resources and tools in bioinformatics for molecular biology research. Scientists actively developing and applying bioinformatics tools in their research will talk about their fields in general as well as their own work. Students must bring a lap-top for in-course demonstrations as well as practical lab exercises. The course is mainly intended for biology students but is also open for students with a computer science or related background wishing to extend their knowledge of informatics problems in the biological domain.

Learning outcome

This course seeks to provide students with a broad overview practical tools used in bioinformatics. Each subject area will introduce requisite background in statistics or other mathematical concepts.

Some topics covered:

• Review of probability and statistics with special emphasis on high throughput analysis

• Working in a shell environment

• Using programming and scripting to develop analytical pipelines

• Biological databases

• Sequence-read mapping

• Structural biology: tools, predictors and 3D modeling

• Introduction to virtual screening and drug discovery

• High throughput sequencing data analysis

• Gene lists and over-representation analysis

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may apply to take this course as a single course student.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

The courses  MBV-INF4410 and MBV-INF9410 have joint admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:

  1. Master students and PhD candidates at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
  2. Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates.
  3. Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students.

Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc.If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally.

This course is open to students studying biology, mathematics or computer science. Students must have at least 120 study points to apply. Students must have a basic understanding of biology/molecular biology at least corresponding to 10 university study points in molecular biology or similar.

The course might be relevant also for students without this background, but candidates should in this case contact the course coordinator before signing up.

Teaching

The course is given as five weeks intensive course that consists of:

  • Lectures

  • In-class tutorials

  • Exercises

It is only necessary to be physically present at the UiO campus for certain parts of the course.

Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture, also for those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for absence is not provided to the student administration studieinfo@ibv.uio.no before the first lecture.

Access to teaching:

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

One week take home exam

Obligatory assignments must be completed and approved before the exam and in the same semester.

When writing your assignments make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations. Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.

An additional, limited, oral examination may be arranged in cases where this is necessary for the student evaluation.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: MBV-INF9410 – Bioinformatics for Molecular Biology (continued), BIOS-IN5410 – Bioinformatics for Molecular Biology

Examination support material

Students may use notes and handouts collected throughout the course.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
