LAT2400 – Reading Latin Texts

Course content

We will read one or more texts that are connected by genre, period, theme and/or author. The text(s) are read in parallel with a significant amount of secondary literature that gives insight into different approaches (theoretical, methodological, hermeneutical) to the chosen topic. The syllabus will vary from semester to semester.

In autumn 2023, the subject is devoted to Roman comedy in the form of a detailed reading of Terence's play Eunuchus (The Eunuch).

Learning outcome

When you have completed this course, you are able to:

  • translate the course text(s) from Latin to Norwegian.
  • analyze the course text(s) with an eye to text critical, linguistic, literary, historical, philosophical, and/or other relevant aspects.
  • discuss aspects of the texts within an academic community.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

(Or equivalent education - please contact the student advisor if you need an evaluation of your previous education in Latin)

We recommend that you have taken 40 credits in Latin before taking this course.

Teaching

14 double hours of seminar teaching throughout the semester.

In the autumn of 2023, the course is jointly taught with LAT4319 – Latin Poetry I.

To be able to take the exam you must have completed successfully the following compulsory activity:

  • classroom test, oral or written

Examination

Portfolio, which consists 3 smaller assignments (each on approx. 3 pages of 2300 characters/page, not including title page and bibliography), evenly distributed over the semester.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
