FYS3230 – Sensors and measurement technology

Course content

Modern measurement systems are rapidly spreading in industrial automation, modern medicine, surveillance, transport, environmental science and various research. This course focuses on sensors and their working principles, as well as signal conditioning and techniques used to make full measurement systems. Typical topics include transfer functions, linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, dynamic area. Both analog and digital signal handling are described, as well as conversion principles between analog and digital representation.

Learning outcome

You learn to understand important aspects of modern measurement systems. You will be able to choose measurement methods and signal treatment relevant for many parts of science and technology. You will be able to read specifications with a critical attitude, and hopefully become a sophisticated user of measurement systems.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. For students taking FYS23230 Autumn 2015 or later, to have FYS3230 included in your degree you must first pass the following HSE courses:


For students who completed FYS3230 in Autumn 2014 – you cannot have FYS3230 included in a degree before following HSE courses are passed:

  • MNHMS0015 - Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) (discontinued) or HMS0501 - Safety and the Physical Environment and HMS0502 Positive Learning Environment and HMS0507 Fire Safety
  • MNHMS0010LS - Introduction to Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or MNHMS0020LS - In-depth Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or HMS0503 - Laboratory Safety

The following HSE courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than FYS3230:

For students taking FYS3230 Autumn 2014 or later, you must first pass the two HSE courses MNHMS0015 and MNHMS0015ES before you may include FYS3230 as part of a degree.

Overlapping courses

5 credits overlap against FYS221 and FYS222.


2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group work / lectures each week. The course includes a joint assignment where the students carry out a real research project under supervision from a team of experienced researchers and write a scientific paper based on the results of the study. During the project, the students will produce reports about their work and make short plenary presentations for the other students.

To attend mandatory laboratory classes it is required that the following courses must be taken earlier than the first compulsory laboratory in FYS3230:


You will need to provide documentation that you have passed HMS0503 and HMS0505 when you attend the first mandatory lab.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.


In order to take the final exam the students must have participated actively in the research project, including the required reports and presentations.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
