Course content

Closer integration, smaller sizes, higher frequencies and more electronics causes electrical noise to be a growing challenge for all electronic design. The subject covers coupling noise (interference) and component noise (internal noise). The course includes both analog and digital circuit design from integrated circuit design to PCB (printed circuit board) and selection of cables and power supply.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to estimate the likely type of noise source based on measurements
  • have knowledge about the sources of noise in different types of components
  • be able to analyse and assess the noise characteristics of various common circuit architectures
  • be able to analyse and assess the noise properties for layout of integrated circuits and printed circuit boards.
  • have knowledge about the noise characteristics of ordinary cables and power supplies.
  • have knowledge about the most common EMC standards

Admission to the course

Overlapping courses

Teaching

Two hours lecture per week. In addition, some weeks with 1-2 hours of exercises, lab proliferation and so on.

Four mandatory exercises that consist of simulation tasks that can be done on private PCs and partial lab assignments performed on target labs. All exercises must be approved.

Compulsory attendance first lecture unless otherwise agreed upon with the lecturer.

Examination

Oral or written exam dependent on the number of students. All mandatory exercises must be passed prior to the exam.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF5460 – Electrical noise – counter measures and calculation (continued)INF9460 – Electronic noise - counteractions and calculations (continued)IN9230 – Electronic Noise - Estimates and Countermeasures

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
