HEVAL4200 – Fundamentals of economic evaluation in health care
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
The course aims to introduce the basic principles of economic evaluation of health programmes (life style interventions, surgical treatment, medical interventions including pharmaceuticals).
You will know:
- Theoretical basis of economic evaluation
- Types of economic evaluations
- The concept of cost and measuring and valuing costs
- Time preferences and discounting
- Measuring health outcomes in “natural units”
- Valuing health outcomes in monetary and quality-of-life-terms
- Types of models
- Use of economic evaluation in health policy – the European experience
You will learn to:
- To read a paper about economic evaluation critically
- To translate decision problems into a decision tree
You will be able to:
- Understand background, methods and use of economic evaluation

Due to the coronasituation and need to ensure further infection control measures the UiO mangement has decided to continue half capacity in the exam facilities (Silurveien) spring 2022. The exam has therefore been changed to home examination Spring 2022.
Written exam (3 hours).
Some of the exam problems will be related to an article which will be distributed by e-mail approximately 3 weeks prior to the exam. A paper copy of this article will be available during the exam.
The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Four types of calculators are allowed to be used during the examination:

- Casio FX-82MS
A web based calculator will be available for use in Inspera.
Language of examination
For students at Eu-HEM: English
For students at HEPMA: The problem set will be given in English. Answers can be given in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or in English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

An EU-hem student cannot present her or himself for the examination in a course more than two times. There will be held re-sits for EU-hem students who have failed an exam or who have legitimate absence (usually illness) in January and August. If you are entitled to a re-sit you must contact the student advisor via email no longer than one week after the result of the exam has been published.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
