Course content

This course provides a broad introduction to basic concepts and theories related to leadership and management in health care organizations. The course also explores the different characteristics of healthcare and how this affects the ability to exercise leadership.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The subject provides you with knowledge about:

  • Concepts and theories related to healthcare management
  • How the field of medicine and doctor-patient roles have evolved over time
  • How to manage change and quality improvement in healthcare
  • How to motivate employees (and oneself)

Skills

This course is primarily aimed at providing students with analytical skills, i.e. the ability to use concepts and theories to understand and describe different challenges related to management in healthcare. The course will also provide students with the ability to reflect on how these challenges can be addressed by healthcare managers. 

General competence

Management is both a theoretical and practical subject. This course emphasizes the theoretical part of the subject, but does also provide examples of how management concepts and theories can be translated into practice. The course also aims to make students more aware of their own interest towards taking on management roles and responsibilities in healthcare.

This course is only available for students at the following master programme:

Health Economics, Policy and Management (master's two years)

European Master in Health Economics and Management (master's two years)

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The course is based on lectures and discussions in class as well as independent studies.

A broad literature related to management in healthcare is presented and discussed through the lectures. Students should read the recommended literature before each lecture, so that they can engage in discussions during the lectures. 

Examination

Written examination.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

For students at Eu-HEM: English

For students at HEPAM: The problem set will be given in English. Answers can be given in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

For Eu-HEM students:

An EU-hem student cannot present her or himself for the examination in a course more than two times. There will be held re-sits for EU-hem students who have failed an exam or who have legitimate absence (usually illness) in January and August. If you are entitled to a re-sit you must contact the student advisor via email no longer than one week after the result of the exam has been published.
