Course content
NB! Spring 2018: Only exam in ARA1120 will be offered. Students must have taken the exam in an earlier semester, or they must have followed the course and completed all mandatory activities.
This course is a skill/task-based Arabic course that will give you training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Arabic. The course also comprises a number of real-life tasks that will boost your spoken Arabic in a relatively short period of time. Teaching is undertaken in modern standard Arabic and either Egyptian Colloquial Arabic or the Levantine dialect.
This course is designed to prepare students to be able to master the Arabic language with a big awareness of cultural aspects and to face possible challenges in studying Arabic abroad.
Learning outcome
Having completed this course, you will:
- be able to talk about yourself and your family members using simple constructions
- be able to read, eventually with increased understanding, non-complex, connected texts dealing with a variety of basic and social needs
- be able to write simple letters, brief synopses and paraphrases, summaries of biographical data, work and school experience.
- be able to handle successfully a variety of uncomplicated, basic and communicative tasks as well as social situations.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
You must have completed ARA1110 – Arabisk språk 1 (discontinued), or be able to document a course/courses equivalent to this.
Teaching

Students will have 4 double hour lessons per week, for 14 weeks throughout the semester.
As the first lesson will give you important information on this course and compulsory tuition activities, attendance at this lesson is strongly recommended.

Requirements to enter the exam: Students need to reach the minimum requirements in each of the following elements to be able to enter the exam.
- Participation: Students need to achieve 80 % at least of participation
- Homework Assignments: Students need to achieve 80 % at least of homework grade
- Quizzes: Students need to achieve 8 0% at least of quizzes grade
- Oral assignments: Students need to achieve 80 % at least of the oral grade
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination

Before you may sit the exam, you must have completed compulsory tuition activities, see the point "Teaching" above.
The final examination consists of a written exam lasting for 4 hours, in combination with an oral exam.
The written exam consists :
- Reading comprehension, where students will read a text in Arabic and answer some questions related to the text.
- Vocabulary part, where students fill in the blanks using vocabulary they have studied, or using the vocabulary to describe some pictures.
- Grammar, where the student will answer grammar questions
- Translation from Norwegian to Arabic and/or writing of a short text related to the syllabus
The exam is to be written in Arabic. Some questions may be given in English.
The written exam counts 70 % of the final grade, the oral exam counts 30 %.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
Students will answer the exam in Arabic. Some questions may be given in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
