Tourist at Your Own Workplace: Viking Coins at the Historical Museum

In the series Tourist at Your Own Workplace, we present attractions from UiO's cabinet of curiosities. This time you will see something as literal as a treasure — the famous Mørstad hoard from the Viking Age. It is being displayed to the public for the very first time!

For over 200 years, the University of Oslo has collected and researched historical coins. In the venerable premises of the Historical Museum, we will this day see some of the well-preserved silver coins from the Viking Age. Some have been found in graves alongside their owners, while others were buried to conceal them — or perhaps as an offering to the gods?

The largest hoard was in fact discovered this year at Rena in Innlandet, and we are fortunate to see coins from the remarkable Mørstad hoard, comprising over 4,000 silver coins from various parts of Europe. Among others, we meet Associate Professor Florent Audy, a numismatist (coin expert) at the Coin Cabinet.
