Emnet will explore and give historical interpretation to three major areas of Norwegian emigration and the Norwegian presence in the United States. It will present the Old World background, with particular emphasis on the rise of mass emigration; it will consider the adaptation to the new land, with discussions of geographic patterns of settlement, the urban and the rural settings, the economic and occupational adjustment, political participation, and the process of assimilation; it will introduce selected aspects of the Norwegian subculture, such as religious life, education, organizational activity, the press, literature, and other cultural expressions.
The main theme of the hovedemne will be the interplay over time of a transplanted set of values and cultural expressions with the demands of life in America broadly understood. The historical interpretation will emphasize a dynamic interaction—rather than a passive acquiescence to “Americanization”—between immigrant cultures and the multicultural American environment.
Hva lærer du?
Students will gain insight into the course of Norwegian emigration to the United States interpreted in light of recent research, and the external social, political, and cultural forces in American society as well as the internal forces within the Norwegian-American population itself that produced a unique ethnic community and the emergence of a specific ethnic identity. The creation of an understanding of the historical experience of an “old” immigrant group, the generational dynamics, and the current celebration of ethnicity constitute major goals, as does an endeavor to make the students appreciate the fact that Norwegian-American identity and cultural developments must be seen as a part of an independent historical process in a society with competing ethnic identities, and consequently different from Norway’s move toward modernization. A major purpose is thus to develop the ability to think comparatively about different kinds of people, using the Norwegian-American experience as a case study.
Studenten skal kunne lese forskningslitteraturen på en kritisk måte og kunne ta stilling til det problemkomplekset som litteraturen omhandler. Studenten skal kunne sammenfatte og framstille forskningsdebatten på en selvstendig og reflektert måte enten skriftlig eller muntlig.
