By now you will likely have recieved grades in StudentWeb, but in addition to this we have also now posted a detailed breakdown on the points you recieved for each subproblem and the total points. This overview is structured as it was for midterms as well.
The points given on each subproblem is an average of two scores from two examiners. This is why you may see some quarter point scores, as each examiner only gives points in half point increments. We have also gone over any significant discrepancies, so there aren't any differences between each examiners scores that would have resulted in a grade change.
The "Total" column is the total points for the final exam, and the "Total % including midterm" column is the % of total points obtained on the final and midterm exams combined, where the midterm exam has been weighted 20% and the final exam 80%.

There will be no problem session the Thursday of this week (14th of May) as that day is a national holiday.
The final problem session will be on the following Thursday as scheduled.
Since this is the last problem session, we will be focusing on exam preparations. I intend to give you some tips for the exam and say a few things about how we grade the exams. I will also be answering any questions you have about the exam, so feel free to come prepared.
I expect this will not take three hours, so the remaining part of the problem session will be used to work on exam problems. Since last years exam was the first exam after field theory was introduced to the course, I recommend you work on that exam in the problem session.
I think it could also be a good idea to talk about grading with a specific example in mind, so we will do this with the last problem on last years exam nearing the end of the problem session.
I hope to see ...
Due to a scheduling conflict there won't be a lecture on Tuesday next week (May 5).
The results from the midterm exam are now posted under the Exam section below. The candidate numbers are listed together with the results. In addition to the total score, the table also includes the points given for each subproblem.
The score is calculated as the average of the scores given by the two examiners. There is no grade given for the midterm.
...because of illness.
The first problem set is now out. As a reminder, this is how it works:
- The new problem set will always be put out (on the semester page) on Tuesday. You can then discuss, and start working on the questions, during the group exercise (= highly recommended !) on Thursday.
- deadline for handing in your answers in canvas is the Tuesday after, 3pm.
- When you hand in a problem set, you will also be assigned a random answer for peer review (hverandreretting), along with a detailed solution to all problems and instructions for how to assign points. The deadline for handing in the problem set that you have been assigned to correct is Friday (any time), so 10 days after the problem set has first been posted.
In total there will be 12 problem sets. In order to be admitted to the exam, you must have at least 3 out of the first 6...
I have now put out lecture notes for the first two lectures. As announced, you will always find the latest lecture notes on the semester page from now one, and I try to upload them latest by Wednesday.
All these lecture notes have been prepared by Are Raklev, but I might implement minor edits to better reflect what we actually did in the lecture.
Welcome to FYS3120 Analytical Mechanics and Electrodynamics!
On the semester pages here, you will always find up-to-date relevant information like problem sets, lecture notes, potential changes and updates to lecture or exercise times, etc. ... so make sure to check it regularly.
The course also has a Canvas page. This is used for handing in homework problems, and as an online forum for questions that arise outside of lecture and group exercise times.
The first lecture will be on January 19. Looking forward to seeing you there !
