IN3260 – Project Assignment in Informatics: Computer Networking

Course content

In this course, the student will explore and report on a topic in data communcation in cooperation with a supervisor. The project will usually have a practical component where the student will program and evaluate an experiment or an application.

The course is suitable for students who desires a deeper understanding of a part of the data communication subject area and/or a research or development career in data communication. The project is carried out in the supervisor's research group.

Learning outcome

After taking the course you will:

• have a very good understanding of a topic in data communication
• have some knowledge of how experiments are performed in data communication
• have some knowledge of how research and development is carried out in data communication
• be able to perform a small project that may include developing a program for an experiment or an application data communication
• be able to write a simple report that describes and discusses the project and its results

Admission to the course

Only for students belonging to Informatikk: Programmering og nettverk and Informatikk: Programmering og systemarkitektur.

Max number of students: 10

Requires grade C or better in IN1010 and grade C or better in either IN2010 or IN2140. Applicants may be summoned for an interview with the lecturer prior to admission.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

• Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

Formal prerequisite knowledge

IN1010 – Object-oriented Programming and either IN2010 – Algorithms and Data Structures or IN2140 – Introduction to operating systems and data communication

Teaching

The course is organized with three joint sessions of two hours for everyone who takes the course:

• Introduction of project work, supervisors, scope and expectations.
• Joint mid-term presentation and assessment of each other's project work.
• Final presentation with feedback and submission of final report.

Guidance based on agreement made with the research group. The course requires a large degree of independent work. The students present their work and read/criticize each other's work along the way.

Between the first and last joint meeting, students will be able to expect eight hours of individual guidance (set up as regular meetings with the supervisor every other week).

Examination

Assessment of a written assignment, as well as an oral presentation of the project. Both parts must be passed and passed in the same semester.

The written assignment counts for 70% of the final grade, while the oral presentation counts for 30%.

Language of examination

You may submit your exam in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
