Course content

The course gives an introduction to fluid mechanics i.e. the mathematical description of the motion of liquids and gases (fluids). The course gives a continuum description of fluids, which is based on the equations for mass conservation and momentum balance (Navier Stokes equations). Fluid mechanics is essential to a wide range of industrial applications such as offshore technology, oil and gas industry, wind energy, meteorology, geological flows as well as biological systems, where the course is an ideal starting point for students with a broad interest in mathematical applications.

Learning outcome

After completing the course you

  • will have knowledge about the properties of fluids - incompressibility, Newtonian fluids, viscosity, etc.
  • can use scaling arguments to define and explain fluid flows
  • can describe viscous and inviscid flows
  • can analytically solve simple flow phenomena through the basic equation for fluid motion
  • can describe typical free-surface flows that couple the interface dynamics with the fluid motion
  • can use scaling and geometry to simplify Navier Stokes equations to simple models that can be solved analytically.

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may apply to take this course as a single course student.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

6 hours of lectures/exercises per week throughout the semester. The exercises are to a large extent based on independent work from the students.

As the teaching might involve laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

Midterm exam which counts 1/4 towards the final grade.

Final written exam which counts 3/4 towards the final grade.

This course has 2 mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

The mandatory assignments must be written with a typesetting software for writing mathematics (e.g. LaTeX).

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: MEK3230 – Fluid Mechanics

Examination support material

Rottmann's formula list and approved calculators are allowed. Information about approved calculators in Norwegian.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This course offers both postponed and resit of examination. Read more:
