Janine Jansen with the Oslo Philharmonic

This evening we are cast into a musical seascape composed by Debussy and Britten, where beauty and danger constantly exist side by side. In addition, Senja Rummukainen performs Shostakovich's Cello Concerto

Janine Jansen has to withdraw from the concert due to health reasons. Violin Concerto No. 1 will therefore be replaced by Cello Concerto No. 1, with Senja Rummukainen as soloist. The programme also includes Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt by Felix Mendelssohn.

About the concert

The programme brings together three works marked by unrest, strong contrasts and emotional tension: Debussy’s impressionistic La Mer, which paints the sea’s shifting light and colours, and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from the opera about the ostracised fisherman Peter Grimes, where the sea forms the backdrop to a human breakdown. Shostakovich’s  Cello Concerto No. 1, written in politically challenging times and not premiered until several years after it was completed, is characterised by melancholy, intensity and an underlying unease. Senja Rummukainen is the soloist, and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts the orchestra.
