Extended stays abroad

PSI has a responsibility to ensure that all staff operate in a safe working environment. This includes informing staff who are planning work-related travel abroad of their rights and responsibilities in matters relating to insurance, social security and taxes, as well as the need to document risk assessment.

When you are planning a work-related stay abroad of four weeks or more, you must familiarize yourself with the information provided here and submit an application at least four weeks in advance of your departure date.

Apply for approval

All stays abroad exceeding four weeks must be approved by the department head. You can apply for approval by submitting the form "Registration of travels abroad".

Please note that the option in the DFØ self-service portal called “Register travel application and travel advance” should only be used when applying for a travel advance.

Insurance while abroad

All staff are personally responsible for ensuring that they have travel insurance for the entire duration of their stay abroad. Note that many types of insurance also require that you are a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (see below). More information regarding stays abroad.

Social security/membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme

All staff are personally responsible for ensuring that they retain their social security rights/membership in the national insurance scheme while abroad. We recommend that everyone leaving Norway for more than four weeks contact NAV about their rights.

Please note that your rights may depend on a bilateral agreement between Norway and your destination country. The relationship between you and NAV is personal, and UiO does not have access to information about which rights accrue to your specific case. More information regarding stays abroad.

The Norwegian Tax Administration

Staff are personally responsible for looking into how a stay abroad may affect taxation.

When we have approved your travel plans PSI will ensure that UiO reports your stay abroad to the Norwegian Tax Administration to secure correct taxation. More information regarding stays abroad.

Using IT when travelling

When travelling you should take some precautions when it comes to using IT tools and equipment to make sure that information is not lost or compromised. More information regarding using IT while travelling.

Nettskjema dictaphone and Educloud Research

You must use the Nettskjema dictaphone app on your phone for interviews and recordings. The dictaphone app will send the audio files directly into Nettskjema. For security reasons, it is not possible to play the audio recordings directly on your phone. The recording is encrypted and is temporarily stored on your phone until the phone is online. More information regarding Nettskjema dictaphone.

UiO does not recommend using external recorders in the field for security reasons as a recorder can be stolen or lost. If the Nettskjema Dictaphone app does not work, never use other Dictaphone apps. In such cases, an external recorder may be used as long as the material is transferred to a secure storage place as soon as possible.

We would also recommend getting an Educloud account. Your interviews will then be automatically transferred to Educloud (which is a data storage and processing tool for sensitive data), where you translate and transcribe all data using autotekst. More information about Educloud.
