LAT4101 – Latin Grammar III

Course content

The course consists of a systematic in-depth review of Latin syntax, focusing on the structure of continuous texts and stylistic elements. We practice translating from Latin into Norwegian and from Norwegian into Latin. We read excerpts from classical Latin prose focusing especially on text structure and stylistics.

Learning outcome

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

• identify all relevant grammatical constructions and explain how they are used to produce continuous Latin texts.
• identify and explain the use of stylistic elements in Latin texts.
• translate continuous texts from Norwegian into Latin using all relevant grammatical constructions and stylistic elements.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

You must be admitted to Classical Studies (master's two years) to sign up for this course. Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

You must have at least 60 ECTS credits in Latin to sign up for this course.

Recommended previous knowledge

We expect you to have knowledge of grammar equivalent to LAT2105 – Latin Grammar II.

Overlapping courses

• 5 credits overlap with LAT4104 – Oversettelse til latin III (discontinued).

Teaching

The course consists of 10 double seminar hours.

We expect you to prepare for the seminars and to participate actively.

In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination, the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:

• written assignments; at least 4 out of 6 must be approved by the teacher.

Examination

The examination consists of a portfolio. The portfolio has two parts which together make up 10 pages.

Part 1: Linguistic (grammar, stylistics, also metre) commentary on one or more excerpts from original Latin texts. The assignment is given by the teacher. This part should not be longer than 5 pages (2300 characters without spaces).

Part 2: A translation of a continuous Norwegian (English/Danish/Swedish) text into Classical Latin (1-2 pages). You must also account for your choices of words and grammatical constructions. This part of the portfolio should not be longer than 5 pages.

In order for you to sit for the examination, all compulsory activities must be approved.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
