FARM5130 – Pharmacy management and leadership
Course content
The course focuses on skills relevant to pharmacy operation such as economics, administration, quality, and management. The students collaborate on managing a virtual pharmacy, while practicing skills necessary for effective interaction with other relevant agents such as pharmacy distributors and government agencies. Leadership, sound pharmacy management and communication are key elements.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you have a thorough skills and can analyse issues related to pharmacy operation, and have a thorough knowledge of pharmacy management.
- you can communicate complex pharmaceutical- and pharmacy issues with patients, personnel, internal and external partners, and can make decisions through interdisciplinary collaboration.
- you have thorough knowledge about organisational, including skills in organising the pharmacy, including personnel management, rotation, logistics, internal control and quality management system.
- you have knowledge of financial management, including budgeting and result monitoring.
- you have knowledge of how to manage the pharmacy soundly, and are able to analyse regulatory issues related to pharmacy management and apply written documentation in the form of laws and regulations.
- you are able to work in a structured, efficient and independent manner, and are solution-oriented, focusing on quality and delivering results within given time-frames.
Admission to the course
The course is mainly open to students who have been admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Oslo. In the event that space is available, other master`s level students may apply. Knowledge in relevant subject area corresponding to the content of Semester 1 through 7 at the department’s Master`s Programme in Pharmacy is required. For students admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy until and including 2016 and who have been transferred from the old study plan, separate formal prerequisite knowledge apply. These are in professional compliance with the formal prerequisite knowledge that apply to the course, but may be replaced by courses from the old study plan, as well as transitional courses. Students on transitional arrangements may contact the study administration for a complete overview of the formal prerequisite knowledge required.
Teaching
The students will in groups run a virtual pharmacy through the competition "Pharmacy Game". The simulation program generates cases in different topics and different degrees of difficulty to be solved. Every day, students are sent prescriptions, customers (virtual and real) with associated issues that must be solved in a responsible way. Each exercise gives points and weekly the points are distributed between the participants in the group based on effort. Simulation of pharmacy management runs over 11 days. The portfolio submission consist of two group submissions. The course also includes 10 hours lecture, excursion days and / or internships, seminars and colloquia.
The course ends with three individual assignments which gives grades. The simulation and compulsory submissions must be approved before the three individual assignments can be completed.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 3 years.
The course may be cancelled if the number of enrolled students is low.
Examination
The course ends with three individual written assignments. Each assignment constitutes 1/3 (33,3 %) of the final grade.
This course has mandatory exercises that must be approved before the final assessment.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
