FYS1120L – Electromagnetism
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
The course describes basic electrical and magnetic phenomena, as well as laws for electrical circuits, both at direct current and alternating current. The course gives a thorough introduction to Maxwell's equations, and how to use them to derive the characteristics of electromagnetic waves.
After having completed the course:
- you have extensive knowledge of electrical and magnetic fields, sources of fields, Maxwell equations in integral and differential form, and you can calculate such fields using analytical and numerical methods
- you can account for electrical and magnetic forces, as well as energy stored in electrical and magnetic fields
- you know basic phenomena in electricity and magnetism and can account for a range of technological solutions that many use daily
- you can analyze a linear electric circuit and calculate currents and voltage differences in different parts of the circuit, both for DC and AC
- you have knowledge of why both traditional and numerical solution methods are important to the subject, and have experience in applying both types of methods to electromagnetic issues
- you can present a chosen topic from relevant physics for fellow students

Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to attend, the Department of Physics has to be informed no later than the same day (e-mail email@example.com), or else you will lose your place in the course.
The course extends over a full semester with 10 hours of teaching per week. 2 double lecturehours, 2 hours of groupteaching, 2 hours of oracle and 2 hours of guidance for the computational essay.
The course includes the following mandatory items:
- 4 mandatory assignments
- Computational essay with a presentation
Participation in at least 75% of the group teachings will exempt you from one of the four mandatory assigments.
Participation in both the initial and final mapping test will exempt you from one of the four mandatory assignments.

To attend mandatory laboratory classes it is required that the following courses must be taken earlier than the first compulsory laboratory in FYS1120:
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
To attend the final exam the four mandatory assignments, the computational essay with an oral presentation and lab work must be approved.
- Final written 4-hour exam that counts 100%.
