BIOS3601 – Genetics and Developmental Biology
Changes in the course due to coronavirus
Autumn 2020 we plan for teaching and examinations to be conducted as described in the course description and on semester pages. However, changes may occur due to the corona situation. You will receive notifications about any changes at the semester page and/or in Canvas.

The course is an introduction to developmental biology and genetics - in plants, animals and other relevant groups of organisms. We will use concepts and principles from genetics and epigenetics to focus on classical, experimental systems /organisms and connections. The context of the course is system-oriented genetics development in a genome perspective, and the essence is how genetics and epigenetics via specialisation and interaction between cells form the foundation for development and morphological traits.
After completing this course, you
- know of and can use the terminology in genetics and developmental biology
- have an understanding of the main concepts in developmental biology and their mechanisms and principles
- know the main morphological principles for development and reproduction in classical model organisms
- know the genetic and molecular mechanisms that operate in development and reproduction
- have insight in and understanding of how connections between genes and genomes play a role in genetics and developmental biology
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
The courses BIOS3601 and BIOS4601 have common admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
1. Bachelor´s programme students at the Department of Biosciences and master´s programme students at the MN Faculty who have the course approved in their study plan.
2. Other program students.
3. Single course students and exchange students.
Applicants are ranked by the number of credits within each group; all applicants within the 1st group are ranked before applicants in the 2nd group etc. For students who have an equal number of credits within one group, admission is determined by random selection.
Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling theHigher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies(in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
- 10 credits overlap with BIOS3600 – Genetics and Developmental Biology.
- 10 credits overlap with BIOS4600 – Genetics and Developmental Biology.
- 10 credits overlap with BIOS4601 – Genetics and Developmental Biology.
- Interactive group tutorials (Mandatory)
Lectures are grouped thematically: organisms, concepts, and principles. Mandatory course work must be approved before the student can attend the exam.
Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture. This also applies to those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for absence is not provided to the student administration email@example.com prior to the first lecture
Approved mandatory course work is valid for 2 years.
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Final written digital written exam in Inspera, 3 hours, that counts 100 % of the final grade.
Mandatory course work must be approved before the student can attend the exam.
The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: BIOS3600 - Genetics and Developmental Biology, BIOS4601 - Genetics and Developmental Biology and BIOS4600 - Genetics and Developmental Biology.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
