Course content

The main aim of the course is to give knowledge about how the glaciers respond on climate changes. A global perspective will be given with emphasis on examples from Polar Regions. Focus will be on understanding processes and impacts of the climate on glacier behaviour.

Learning outcome

During the course you will:

  • Understand how different parameters affect the surface mass balance of glaciers
  • Understand the dynamics of the glaciers and the effect on mass changes
  • Get insight into mass balance modelling
  • Get insight in the different methods to analyze glacier and ice sheet changes,
  • Be updated and able to discuss recent and ongoing research activity on glaciers and ice sheets

The topics may be given different weight depending on the background of the students.

Recommended previous knowledge

Bachelor courses in physical geography; glaciology/geomorphology.

10 credits overlap with GEO9420 – Glaciology

5 ECTS points with AG325 given at UNIS.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.


1. Written and oral presentation of a prescribed topic (scientific paper) counts 30%

2. Oral or written examination counts 70%

A written exam may be held instead of an oral exam if there are more than eight students.

Language of examination

In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:
