Roadmap for research infrastructure

State of the art scientific equipment is important for scientific progress and the University of Oslo has decided to establish a roadmap for research infrastructure.

As part of our efforts to develop this roadmap, a comprehensive survey of what we have of scientific equipment is being carried out. A website showing an overview of what we have, has also been established. The overview has not been finalized yet. It is a considerable task to gather information about all the equipment and we are working to reach the finish. We will also develop a booking system to make it easier to use equipment across our organization.

The roadmap will include research infrastructure used only by researchers and students at the University of Oslo, equipment we use together with other institutions (e.g. Oslo University Hospital), as well as national and international infrastructure that is used and will be used by us.

Research infrastructure is expensive and the roadmap that is being developed will be used as a tool to determine where we need to invest in the years to come. There is no doubt that research infrastructure is important and we write the following in our strategy:

«Large parts of the Faculty’s research activities are based on the use of advanced scientific equipment. The Faculty shall invest in, including the establishment of access to, infrastructure that enables groundbreaking research in priority areas, in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas. The Faculty shall contribute to the buildup of infrastructures for basic long term research at national level and actively participate in the development of selected international infrastructures in Norway and abroad. Handling increasingly larger volumes of data will be an important aspect of the development of infrastructures for research and education. The Faculty shall be a driving force for ensuring the availability and reuse of research data.»
