STK1000 – Introduction to Applied Statistics

Course content

The course provides an introduction to applied statistics. The students will learn how data should be organized and interpreted and how to draw conclusions from data. The course provides a basis for performing standard statistical analyses using statistical software.

Learning outcome

After completing the course you:

  • will be familiar with standard methods for describing data and relations in data by summarizing measures and graphical representations
  • will know basic principles and methods for collecting data
  • will know the probability concept and the basic rules for probabilities (including conditional probability and Bayes rule), as well as having knowledge of random variables (including expectation, variance, and covariance for such) and probability distributions (including normal, binomial and Poisson)
  • will be familiar with the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem;
  • can perform statistical inference such as point estimation, confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing for one and two samples (especially t-tests)
  • can do simple and multiple linear regression analyses
  • can use the statistics program R for basic data analysis.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

  • Knowledge corresponding to R1 from Norwegian upper secondary school.
