Changes in the course due to coronavirus

Autumn 2020 the exams of most courses at the MN Faculty will be conducted as digital home exams or oral exams, using the normal grading scale. The semester page for your course will be updated with any changes in the form of examination.

Course content

The course is based on KJM1101 – Generell kjemi (equivalent to MENA1001 – Materials, Energy and Nanotechnology) and focuses on chemical properties of the elements and their compounds. Trends and systematic variations are described with reference to chemical bonding, structure and thermodynamics. Redox chemistry, electrochemistry, phase diagrams and stability are illustrated by practical examples. Furthermore, structure, bonding, structure, symmetry, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of complexes in the aqueous environment are discussed. The course provides an introduction to crystal structure for inorganic compounds and to analytical methods for composition and phase conditions. The laboratory course emphasizes studies of systematic trends, complexes, analytical methods and modeling to understand equilibrium and stability. The course provides the basis for further studies in chemistry and material science.

Learning outcome

After successfully having completed the course:

  • you have gained a broad overview on inorganic chemistry and you have learned how properties varies systematically throughout the periodic system.
  • you are able to use insight in atomic arrangement and chemical bonding to understand stability and reactivity of simple inorganic molecules and compounds.
  • you have a background for understanding and performing calculations and computer simulations of chemical equilibria.
  • you have insight to chemical processes applied in industry for some important inorganic products, with focus on processes of relevance for the Norwegian industry.
  • you have learned basic concepts for magnetic and optical properties of d-metal complexes.
  • you have some knowledge on selected methods used for characterization of solid inorganic compounds.
  • you can plan and perform laboratory experiments, evaluate and present results in terms of expectations for a laboratory journal, including insight to HSE aspects of chemicals and working routines in the laboratory.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Before you can attend the first mandatory laboratory exercise, you must have passed the following courses:

Approved laboratory course in either KJM1101 – Generell kjemi, MENA1001 – Materials, Energy and Nanotechnology or similar courses.

Either KJM1101 – Generell kjemi, or MENA1001 – Materials, Energy and Nanotechnology, or a similar course.

Overlapping courses


The course duration is one semester, and there are six hours of classes each week, in addition to the mandatory laboratory course. The teaching consists of:

  • 4 hours of lectures each week

  • 2 hours of group exercises each week

  • A mandatory laboratory course consisting of 5 laboratory exercises, a total of 25 hours.

  • 3 mandatory exercises must be approved

The laboratory course is mandatory and must be approved prior to the final examination. In order to get the laboratory course approved, all assignments must be completed and all reports approved.

A completed and approved laboratory course is valid for six semesters after the semester it was approved. After this period, you must complete the laboratory course again in order to prepare for the exam.

It is mandatory to attend the first lecture (including students on the waiting list). If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry before the start of the lecture, otherwise your course registration will be cancelled.

Attendance at the laboratory course is mandatory. If you are prevented from meeting, you have to show documentation that you were legally absent (medical note from a doctor or similar).

Before you can attend the mandatory laboratory courses, you have to have passed the following courses:

You have to be able to show documentation that you have passed the HSE courses on the first lab exercise.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.


Final written exam (4 hours) counts 100%.

The laboratory course and the three mandatory assignments must be approved before the final exam.

Digital examination

The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
