Course content

English: The teaching deals with the main currents of European and American architecture history in the 20th century, closely related to theory. In some cases, the interest is directed towards architects who have been particularly important, also with a monographic point of view

Norwegian: Undervisningen behandler hovedstrømninger i europeisk og amerikansk arkitekturhistorie på 1900-tallet, tett knyttet til teori. I enkelte tilfeller rettes interessen mot arkitekter som har hatt særlig stor betydning, da også med et monografisk siktepunkt

Learning outcome

By completing this course and passing the exam you will:

  • acquire an overview and insight into the most important periods of modern architecture from about 1890 to 1960.
  • gain a deeper understanding of the practices of the most important architects and their central structures and projects. Especially Adolf Loos, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Richard Neutra.
  • acquire an insight into key theoretical topics within the theories of modernist architecture.
  • gain experience with presenting and discussing architecture both related to construction and theories.

Ved å gjennomføre dette emnet og bestå eksamen vil du:

  • tilegne deg en oversikt over og innsikt i de viktigste periodene innen den moderne arkitekturen fra ca 1890 til 1960.
  • få en dypere forståelse av de mest sentrale arkitekters praksis og deres sentrale byggverk og prosjekter. Spesielt Adolf Loos, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe og Richard Neutra.
  • tilegne deg en innsikt i sentrale teoretiske emner innen teorier omkring den modernistiske arkitekturen.
  • få erfaring med å muntlig legge frem og diskutere arkitektur både knyttet til byggverk og teorier.

Teaching

English: The teaching will be about 28 hours, with a combination of lectures and group work. Each group is expected to submit a minimum of two articles during the teaching period. It is a prerequisite for being able to follow the teaching that the students participate actively in the group work. Please note that information about the course may be sent to your student address or may be posted in Canvas.

Norwegian: Undervisningen vil være på ca 28 timer, med en kombinasjon av forelesninger og gruppearbeid.

Hver gruppe forventes å legge frem minimum to artikler i løpet av undervisningsperioden. Det er en forutsetning for å kunne følge undervisningen at studentene deltar aktivt i gruppearbeidet.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

English: The exam at KUN2140 is a folder exam consisting of a written semester assignment of 6-8 pages and a 2-hour written final examination with knowledge questions.

In the assessment, the semester assignment 2/3 and the school exam are weighted 1/3 of the final grade.

The semester assignment must be submitted to Inspera. You must familiarize yourself with the login and submission method prior to the deadline for submission of the exam. See information about Inspera below and on the semester page.

When writing a term paper, you are entitled to individual guidance from the teacher. A prerequisite for this is that you deliver a draft of the semester assignment. It is assumed that the draft meets certain minimum requirements. Further information on the supervision and submission of drafts is given to the subject teacher in connection with the teaching. Your right to guidance lapses if you do not deliver the draft within the specified deadline or if the draft does not meet the minimum requirements.

Norwegian: Eksamen på KUN2140 er en mappeeksamen bestående av en skriftlig semesteroppgave på 6-8 sider og en 2-timers skriftlig avsluttende skoleeksamen med kunnskapsspørsmål.

Ved vurderingen vektes semesteroppgaven 2/3 og skoleeksamen 1/3 av endelig karakter.

Semesteroppgaven skal leveres inn i Inspera. Du må gjøre deg kjent med innlogging og innleveringsmåte i forkant av frist for innlevering av eksamen. Se informasjon om Inspera nedenfor og på semestersiden.

Når du skriver semesteroppgave, har du krav på individuell veiledning fra lærer. En forutsetning for dette er at du leverer et utkast til semesteroppgaven. Det forutsettes at utkastet tilfredsstiller visse minimumskrav. Nærmere opplysninger om veiledning og innlevering av utkast blir gitt faglærer i forbindelse med undervisningen. Din rett til veiledning bortfaller dersom du ikke leverer utkast innen fastsatt frist, eller dersom utkastet ikke tilfredsstiller de fastsatte minimumskrav.

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
