Course content

Medical terminology. General diagnostics. Electrophysical methods like ECG, EEG, EMG, defibrillator and pacemaker. Measurement techniques for respiration and circulation. Methods for intensive monitoring. clinical/chemical measurement techniques. Disinfection/sterilisation, sensors. Imaging techniques: X-rays, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, magnetic resonance. Supporting instrumentation like incubator, respirator, anaesthesia machine and dialysis machine. Surgical techniques with diathermy and laser.

Learning outcome

To obtain knowledge about medical instrumentation and the physical and medical basis for this.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

10 credits overlap against FYS323.

Recommended previous knowledge

FYS1120 - Electromagnetism and FYS1210 - Elementary electronics with project work.

Overlapping courses

10 credits with FYS4250 - Biomedical instrumentation

Teaching

The course extends over a full semester with 4 hours of lectures per week. There will be one compulsory project assignment that all students have to pass in order to take the final exam. The compulsory project will be an in-depth project where the candidate compare three different diagnostic technologies used for the same diagnosis and give an analysis of advantages/disadvantages, limits, and posibilities. (E.g.: CT/MR/PET)

Examination

There will be one compulsary mid term exam that must be passed in order to take the final exam. Final oral / written exam. Letter grade.
