GEO4240 – Seismic Interpretation
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
This course gives the students an introduction to the interpretation of seismic reflection data. First, the basic principles and limitations of the seismic method are reviewed before structural and stratigraphic interpretations are applied to 2D seismic data. The main part of the course deals with 3D seismic data and interactive interpretation on a work station, including Introduction, structural and stratigraphic interpretation, reservoir identification and evaluation, horizon and formation attributes, visualization. The course is completed by project work analyzing a 3D seismic dataset from the Norwegian Continental Shelf and presentation of the results in a written report. The results will be discussed in relation to selected key scientific papers from the study area.
After taking this course you will know:
- Basic principles and practical experience in 2D/3D seismic interpretation.
- Modern interpretation techniques/tools in an interactive workstation environment.
- Seismic expression of various structural and stratigraphic features.
- The role of seismic data in integrated basin analysis.
- How to present project work and results in a written report.
- How to give an oral presentation of your project work and discuss the results in relation to previous work in the study area.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Student administration (email@example.com).
We reserve the right to change the teaching form and examination of the course in semesters where 5 or fewer students have been admitted.
- Exercises and project work count 40%.
- Final written exam (3 hours) count 60%.
- All exam parts must be passed individually in order to pass the course.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:
